A dock leveller must raise, lower and position itself correctly to provide a safe transition between a warehouse loading bay and a truck bed. If the platform remains raised and will not return to its normal position, loading operations may be interrupted and the loading area may become unsafe.

A dock leveller stuck in the raised position can indicate a hydraulic valve problem, an electrical control fault, mechanical obstruction or a failure in the lowering mechanism.

The cause depends on the dock leveller's design, so the equipment should be inspected before anyone attempts to lower it manually.

1. Faulty Hydraulic Valve

  • Hydraulic valves control the movement of oil through the system. If a valve becomes stuck, contaminated or damaged, it may prevent the hydraulic pressure from releasing correctly.
  • Possible symptoms include a platform that lifts normally but fails to lower, or one that responds inconsistently to the controls.
  • A qualified technician can inspect the hydraulic circuit and determine whether the valve requires cleaning, repair or replacement.

2. Electrical Control-System Failure

The dock leveller's control system manages the operating sequence. A faulty push button, relay, contactor, wiring connection or controller may prevent the lowering command from reaching the relevant components.

You may notice that the control panel is powered but the platform does not respond when the lowering button is pressed.

The electrical system should be checked by a qualified technician. Safety switches and interlocks must not be bypassed to force the platform to move.

3. Hydraulic Cylinder or Pressure-Release Problem

Hydraulic cylinders operate the platform and, depending on the design, the lip mechanism. A damaged cylinder or a fault affecting the release of hydraulic pressure may interfere with normal movement.

If the dock leveller remains raised despite the controls appearing to work, the hydraulic system may require further testing.

The technician should inspect the relevant cylinders, valves and pressure-control components in accordance with the manufacturer's procedures.

4. Mechanical Obstruction or Damaged Components

  • Debris, damaged hinges, a bent component or a jammed mechanism may prevent the platform from lowering correctly.
  • Mechanical problems may be accompanied by scraping, grinding or banging noises. However, a lack of unusual noise does not rule out a mechanical fault.

Do not attempt to push the platform down or reach beneath it to remove an obstruction. The equipment must be secured and made safe before authorised personnel inspect the mechanism.

5. Hydraulic Power Unit or Motor Fault

  • The hydraulic power unit provides the pressure required for dock leveller movement. A motor or power-unit fault can interrupt the normal operating sequence.
  • The effect depends on the equipment design. Some faults prevent the platform from moving at all, while others interfere with a particular stage of operation.
  • A technician can assess the motor, pump, electrical supply and hydraulic circuit to identify the source of the problem.

6. Safety Interlock or Operating Sequence Problem

Many dock levellers incorporate safety devices and interlocks to prevent unsafe operation. If an interlock is activated, a safety condition is not satisfied or a component fails, the system may refuse a particular movement.

The issue may be related to a safety switch, control signal or another condition specified by the manufacturer.

The correct response is to identify why the interlock is active or why the operating sequence has failed. Never bypass safety devices to lower a raised platform.
